Episode 3: The Filigree Pommel Cap

This cap which was originally mounted to the hilt of the sword of a warrior living in 7th century England, is one of the most intriguing objects in the Staffordshire Hoard.

In this latest episode these treasures, Pieta Greaves, Conservation Co-ordinator, discusses the highly sophisticated manufacturing techniques used by the mysterious craftsmen who produced this work of art. She reveals that the sword to which the pommel was attached had been well-used as the cap was worn away by its owner’s hand.

A further seven films will feature in the coming weeks.
