Wimbledon owes its existence to Harry Gem
The Forgotten Mr Wimbledon who is buried at the Church of England Cemetery at Warstone Lane
Wimbledon has its roots in a garden in Birmingham
It was in 1859 that lawn tennis pioneer Harry Gem and his friend JBA Perera first experimented with a game recognizably the forerunner of the modern game of lawn tennis.
Even the size of the modern-day tennis court is in direct correlation to the size of their garden.
Harry Gem is one of many historically important people buried at Key Hill or Warstone Lane Cemetery.
