As part of Ikon’s 50th year we present a series of events focusing on the five decades of Ikon’s history and the social, political and cultural context.

1960s: The rise of counterculture

Saturday 29 March, 11am-8pm
The Library of Birmingham

Our first event in this series celebrates the 1960s. A full day of talks, screenings and discussions includes:

  • Illustrated talk by Dr Kieran Connell, University of Birmingham exploring the influence of the student protests and popular culture of the late 1960s
  • Panel discussion on Ikon in the 1960s with artists John Salt and Jesse Bruton
  • Exploring the Library archives with Dr Chris Upton
  • Film screening of Motorcity Music Years: Second City Sinners (1992), plus Q & A with filmmakers Jonnie Turpie and Roger Shannon
  • Flatpack Film Festival screening of Medium Cool (1969), Cert. 15
