New for summer 2015 is an inspiring visitor experience, the World of Wedgwood.
Opening its doors to the public in mid-July, the experience is set in 240 acres of Staffordshire countryside, and combines an array of engaging attractions that bring to life Wedgwood’s 250 years’ heritage in the British ceramics industry. Visitors can enjoy factory tours, hands-on ceramic making, the Wedgwood Museum, stunning design installations, Flagship Store, the Wedgwood Tea Room and children’s play areas in beautiful landscaped grounds.
See how it’s made at the Wedgwood Factory Tour and Design Studios
To see some of the best craftsmen and women in the ceramics industry throwing, glazing and decorating, the new interactive Wedgwood Factory Tour is a must. Visitors are invited to follow the journey of Wedgwood’s iconic products from the potter’s wheel to the decorating studio.
The World of Wedgwood Design Studio offers a walk-through interactive experience that brings to life the brand’s unique approach to design. Visitors can learn more about how Wedgwood designers combine traditional methods and the most modern technology to create their iconic pieces – from the initial concept through to the finished product.
Get hands-on in the Decorating and Master Craft Studios
Visitors looking to make their own work of art are invited to do so in the World of Wedgwood Decorating Studio. A fun and hands-on experience designed to appeal to all ages, simply choose a teapot, mug, plate or picture frame and decorate using paint, digital printing and illustration techniques to create a treasured keepsake of your visit or unique gift for friends and family.
To try your hand at throwing a pot, visit the Master Craft Studio, where Wedgwood’s experts will show guests how to create beautifully-crafted pieces using traditional methods including ‘throwing’ clay on the pottery wheel and decorative ornamenting. Wedgwood’s iconic jasperware clay is used during these sessions – a porcelain invented by Josiah Wedgwood himself and famed for its distinctive smooth texture, matte finish and variety of colours which can be seen in the prestigious Jasperware Collection.
Step back in time at the Wedgwood Museum
Enjoy one of the finest ceramics collections in the world with a visit to the award-winning Wedgwood Museum. Home to the Wedgwood Collection, one of the most important industrial and ceramics archives in the world, displaying over 3000 artefacts, visitors are invited to browse the exhibits dating back to 1759 when Josiah Wedgwood founded the company.
The Collection was at risk of being split up and sold on the open market, but was saved following a successful public fundraising campaign led by the Art Fund, who gifted it to the V&A. The Collection has been loaned to the Wedgwood Museum by the V&A allowing visitors to discover the story of the Wedgwood family and ground-breaking changes in ceramic design and production techniques in its natural home. A series of dynamic events and guest exhibitions will feature throughout the year.
