Shropshire Council’s Museums and Archive Services have developed an innovative and interesting way people can get involved and actively contribute to the heritage of Shropshire, and you don’t have to go far to do it!
Funded through the Arts Council for England Shropshire’s Heritage Heroes is a website developed to enable those people who have passion for heritage but who can’t get to a museum or archive in the county, to volunteer from home. We are hoping to attract volunteers with specialisms who can provide expert advice on some of the collections within Shropshire but you don’t need to be an expert, and you don’t even have to live in Shropshire, you just need a computer, some time and a passion for heritage.
The website, which can be found at www.heritageheroes.org.uk provides opportunities for all skill levels, volunteers can transcribe documents, provide information on items such as coins or photographs or simply spell and grammar check entries. Every accepted contribution will enhance the records that are currently held and therefore, provide the public with greater access to the collections held in Shropshire.
Once registered, volunteers can start to work on projects by placing them in a shopping basket. When work is completed it is submitted awaiting moderation by a professional. If accepted the record is re-imported back into the collections databases which provide the information for the online catalogue. The online catalogue is the first port of call for those who are looking for historical records or artefacts in Shropshire.
We are working with local museums and archive centres across Shropshire getting items prepared ready to be featured on the website. We aim to have a variety of items that will suit all interests. The following are currently available to work on:
- A commercial directory;
- A Wellington student project/thesis;
- A selection of roman coins;
- A selection of old Bank Notes;
- A field diary relating to World War One;
- A Red Cross book detailing houses in Shropshire which were hospitals during WWI;
- A selection of magic lantern slides.
If anyone is interested in either becoming a virtual volunteer or talking about the project in more detail please get in touch by emailing email@example.com or why not visit the website at www.heritageheroes.org.uk register and get volunteering!
